History of YPN

The Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network (YPN) evolved out of a regional economic development planning process led by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN).  Target2010 launched in the December of 2005 with a goal of focus on targeting quality companies that offer better jobs with higher wages, that do not put a strain on the natural environment, and that give back to the community.  The project identified that retaining and attracting young talent is a critical need for the greater Reno-Tahoe region.

In January of 2006  Rebecca Ryan, CEO of Next Generation Consulting gave a keynote address at Directions 2006 hosted by the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce and EDAWN.  In the speech Ryan challenged the community to take action on empowering young professionals to get involved in maintaining the region’s economic vitality and quality of life.

EDAWN utilized Ryan’s call to action as a springboard to assess the feasibility of starting a grassroots young professional group.  A community scan determined there were no regional groups specifically geared toward young professionals.  In Summer 2006 several focus groups were convened of young professionals asking them what they were looking for in an organization geared towards them.

Out of those focus groups the first meeting of the Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network was held on November 9th, 2006 with more than 40 people attending.  Since that meeting dozens of volunteers have been working with several committees and helping create the mission, vision and goals for the organization.  In December of that year a formal board of directors was appointed. In February 2007 the group celebrated its official launch at Directions 2007 in front of more than 700 regional business leaders.

The formation and structure of the Reno Tahoe YPN has been developed by a growing membership. The focus has always been to cultivate an informed and active young professional community that collaborates with the community and a variety of established partner organizations throughout northern Nevada.
