The opportunity to sit with a member of the Nevada Assembly (thanks Assemblyman Bobzien, fellow YPN founding member) during the floor session towards the end of the legislative session is a very rare and valuable experience.

I’m grateful to the YBP/YPN for facilitating this opportunity. Despite getting started late (which seems to be an epidemic in that building), the floor session is a seemingly endless litany of formality. Bills are moved to various committees to elude deadlines (and thus, death), committee reports are read and visitors are welcomed. It helped me understand that government is about politics and patience – and probably some strong coffee. Nonetheless, the opportunity was eye-opening and insightful.

Thanks to Qdoba for providing a wonderful lunch. A special thanks to Tom Clark from Holland & Hart for the legislative overview and pop quiz. He was very knowledgeable about the hot topics in the session including energy, domestic partnerships, and smoking in bars.

Since I live in Reno and work in Carson, it was great to mingle with my peers from both areas. I see a strong partnership forming between YPN and Carson’s YBP – there are many great programming opportunities that we can co-promote. All in all, the Power Lunch was great event. I learned a lot about the process of government and I met a lot of new friends with whom I intend to develop relationships.

So, it has been a while since I attended a Raising the Bar Event for YPN. And, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure about the event…who would be there, what should I wear, where do I go when I walk in, how would I meet people, and should I casually stroll in just a little late to make sure people are there?

I walked into The Sanctuary fashionably late wearing a casual turtleneck sweater and jeans. As soon as the door shut behind me, all my uncertainties disappeared. Some very friendly YPN Members greeted me and we began chatting. Little did I know when I got there, The Sanctuary is not actually a bar, but rather a health and fitness center which includes spa services, workshops/seminars, and even a tea room! The employees of the wellness retreat were also warm and gracious. They had a stash of wine for people like me who wanted to wind down from a long day at work.Wine in hand, I was ready to switch gears and start some social interaction. I immediately recognized a good friend of mine. Unlike me, she arrived very early to the event and already had a chance to scope the place out. She acted as my tour guide and took me to the different fitness areas and spa rooms.

People tend to congregate around food, and that’s when I had a chance to see who was at the event. Some people were chatting in small groups, some were touring the place and experiencing demos of really neat fitness machines, and others (like myself) were nibbling on yummy cheese and brownie bites while chatting with my peers.

I’m so glad I gave Raise the Bar another go. It was not difficult to get into “relax” mode when you are in a beautiful venue with a nice glass of wine, delicious food, free chair massages, and great people. I met quite a few young professionals and am looking forward to seeing my new friends at next month’s event!

Welcome to The Art + Environment Conference at the Nevada Museum of Art. We’re launching this new initiative with a conference in October, and we hope you will join us to talk about how and why art has become just as important as science in understanding the nature of environments.

Just as scientists in the 1960s began crossing disciplines to understand how environments work, so artists started to mix genres in order to model our relationship with them. Sculptors stopped working with clay and steel in their studios and went directly to the earth. Architects became installation artists and digital cartographers. Painters and photographers became participant-observers in agriculture and industry.

We’re bringing together artists, designers, writers, and scientists from around the country to discuss how they change-and are changed by-the natural, built, and virtual environments in which they work.

General Registration (May 16 to September 26, 2008)
NMA Members – $360 // General – $400 // Students – $300

Seating is available for 180 registrants with an additional 60 seats available in the simulcast area. Seats will be assigned in the order of registrations received until final capacity is met.

Saturday Afternoon Excursion to the Nevada Desert
Saturday, October 4 // 3:30 to 7:30 pm //$50 per person

The Museum will host an afternoon excursion to Nevada’s scenic desert including the Pyramid Lake region. Enjoy the open spaces of northern Nevada, walk the same land as those from centuries prior, and listen to indigenous Paiute stories told by Ben Aleck and Ralph Burns of the Pyramid Lake Museum/Visitors’ Center. Leading the excursion will be Peter Goin, photographer and Foundation Professor of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno.
