“If I have seen further than others it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants.” — Sir Isaac Newton.
This quote has always been one of my favorites. When I think about the man that unlocked some of the most important secrets of the galaxy uttering these words I can only imagine that this is humility personified to the greatest degree, or it is true — to truly discover your greatest potential, you must learn from those that came before you. I have always thought it was the latter.
With this as our background, I am pleased to announce the successful launch of the Reno-Tahoe YPN “Power Lunch.” Our inaugural event welcomed Congressman Jon Porter to share his valuable insight with the well attended group.
The Congressman began the lunch with an interesting dialog on his career leading up to his service in Washington D.C., and highlighted the challenges of running his own business while serving as a politician. The Congressman began his political career as a city councilman in Boulder City where he eventually became Mayor and was then elected to serve the State as a Senator in Carson City. In 2003, after the redistricting following the 2000 census, the Congressman was elected to serve in Congress and has continued serving since.
The general discussion was followed by a captivating question and answer period where the Congressman discussed issues ranging from the war to immigration to what we as young professionals can do to have an effect on our environments.
Judging from the reaction of the attendees, the event was a tremendous success. We look forward to providing a wide range of interesting and informative speakers throughout this series.
Any suggestions for who you’d like to see at future lunches? Please comment below.
See you at the next Power Lunch!
