Excuse me, sir?

Last week during a meeting, I started feeling a little pressure in my lower abdomen.  You know, the type of pressure that comes after drinking a few bottles of water and a can of soda in the later part of a two hour meeting.  Needless to say, I needed to make a quick bathroom stop.  I quietly stepped out and rushed to the bathroom, realizing that the quicker the seconds tick by, the more likely my boss would notice that I’m not where I’m supposed to be. Perhaps when I’m a boss, I can take my time a little more, but right now, I was in a hurry. Distracted by the thought that my absence had been noticed, I rushed out the door, nearly knocking down one of the janitors on his way in.  Slightly startled, he jumped up and said, “Excuse me, sir.”  I apologized to him as well, and didn’t walk more than two steps before it hit me…

He just called me “sir.”  When the hell did I become a “sir?”  Have you seen my Facebook page?  Shoot, it wasn’t that long ago that I was mastering the proper technique of throwing a ping pong ball into a cup of beer and arguing with my friends about who would win in a fight – Johnny from the “Karate Kid” or Patrick Swayze’s character in “Road House.”  The point is, my dad is “mister” and “sir.”  I’m still a youngster… or am I?

I realize that there are several points in my life that have caused me to stop and reflect on where I have been, where I am, and where I would like to go.  This experience required me to do it once again.  I thought about the situation a little more later that day, and do you know what I found out?  I kinda liked being called “sir.”  In fact, even though I may not be a “sir” in my mind, I think it might be what I want for myself in the future.

Some of you may be wondering where I’m going with this, so here is the point.  Maybe when you reflect on what it is you want from yourself in the future or otherwise set goals, your desire is to become respected, or maybe it is to have a successful career.  Heck, maybe it is just to have a kick ass time and meet a lot of people.  Regardless of what it is you want for yourself in the future, Reno-Tahoe YPN can help you get there.  Whether it is through our several networking events or career advancement through our new hYPe program, Reno-Tahoe YPN offers something for everyone.  And the good news… we are growing like never before.  We have been busy adding new events and programming that relate directly to the things that you have told us are important to you.  However, the continued success of these activities is only possible with your participation.  So, just do it…  sign up for that committee, grab a beer with us at the next Raise The Bar event, listen to our community leaders at a Power Lunch, get involved in the Pebble Project on April 21st, or just take that hYPe class.  Whatever it is, be a part of something rad.  You’ll be happy you did.

As a Guest Author you can increase your reach, promote yourself, your company and our community!

Did you know that Reno Tahoe YPN has a blog?

Yeah, not many folks do. As the generation that’s grown up with technology and social media, we realize how wrong this is. But with your help and an awesome opportunity to promote yourself, your company and our community, we think we at last have a solution!

Over the last year the Board has been trying to figure out ways to involve members in spreading the word on all things YP. We have always wanted to find ways promote our members as much as possible because it is our goal to have our members be the most connected, informed and vocal group in Reno-Tahoe. We have struggled with how to get more blog content on the YPN Blog [link] so that it becomes a valuable resource not only for those in the area, but also for folks looking for information from outside our immediate region.

So, how can we do this? And how can you help? Introducing the YPNsights Guest Author Program!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Write a blog entry that is relevant to young professionals (you can reference our list of posted topics below to get some ideas, or come up with your own). The only rule is that the content must relate back to Reno-Tahoe YPN, YPs in general, or even better, YPs in our community. No matter what the topic, it must have a YP angle.
  2. Submit your post, a headshot or photo (if available) and contact information to execdirector@renotahoeypn.com. Submissions will be posted complete with links back to you, your company, and/or your own blog.
  3. All* submissions will be posted on the blog, but each month a lucky few will get the added bonus of being highlighted in our YPNsights Newsletter. This is a fantastic self-promotion opportunity for you. So show off your expertise, and get writing!
  4. This opportunity is only available to current Members of YPN, so make sure you followed up on that renewal notice!

This will be an ongoing effort, so submissions will be accepted year-round. For consideration in the following month’s YPNsights Newsletter, submissions must be received by the 20th of the preceding month.

We hope you find this new concept exciting. It’s just the beginning – we’re exploring several other promotions and new ways for our valued Members to get involved with YPN simply by doing what they are good at.

Please let us know if you have any questions about our new Guest Author Program by calling 829-3555 or via email at execdirector@renotahoeypn.com . We look forward to hearing from you!

* The YPN Board of Directors provides overall editorial oversight over the Blog and reserves the right to withhold a submission from posting if it is not in alignment with the purpose of the Blog.

A few topics to get you started:

  • Being Green (business, personal, etc)
  • New Business Profiles (what’s new/coming in town and the area)
  • Real Estate
  • Education
  • Kids/Family (expecting kids, raising kids, finding work/life balance)
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Travel and Staycations
  • Food & Dining (local deals/finds)
  • Volunteerism (could be personal or corporate experiences)

The opportunity to sit with a member of the Nevada Assembly (thanks Assemblyman Bobzien, fellow YPN founding member) during the floor session towards the end of the legislative session is a very rare and valuable experience.

I’m grateful to the YBP/YPN for facilitating this opportunity. Despite getting started late (which seems to be an epidemic in that building), the floor session is a seemingly endless litany of formality. Bills are moved to various committees to elude deadlines (and thus, death), committee reports are read and visitors are welcomed. It helped me understand that government is about politics and patience – and probably some strong coffee. Nonetheless, the opportunity was eye-opening and insightful.

Thanks to Qdoba for providing a wonderful lunch. A special thanks to Tom Clark from Holland & Hart for the legislative overview and pop quiz. He was very knowledgeable about the hot topics in the session including energy, domestic partnerships, and smoking in bars.

Since I live in Reno and work in Carson, it was great to mingle with my peers from both areas.  I see a strong partnership forming between YPN and Carson’s YBP – there are many great programming opportunities that we can co-promote.  All in all, the Power Lunch was great event.  I learned a lot about the process of government and I met a lot of new friends with whom I intend to develop relationships.

So, it has been a while since I attended a Raising the Bar Event for YPN.  And, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure about the event…who would be there, what should I wear, where do I go when I walk in, how would I meet people, and should I casually stroll in just a little late to make sure people are there?

I walked into The Sanctuary fashionably late wearing a casual turtleneck sweater and jeans. As soon as the door shut behind me, all my uncertainties disappeared.  Some very friendly YPN Members greeted me and we began chatting.  Little did I know when I got there, The Sanctuary is not actually a bar, but rather a health and fitness center which includes spa services, workshops/seminars, and even a tea room! The employees of the wellness retreat were also warm and gracious. They had a stash of wine for people like me who wanted to wind down from a long day at work.Wine in hand, I was ready to switch gears and start some social interaction.  I immediately recognized a good friend of mine.  Unlike me, she arrived very early to the event and already had a chance to scope the place out.  She acted as my tour guide and took me to the different fitness areas and spa rooms.

People tend to congregate around food, and that’s when I had a chance to see who was at the event. Some people were chatting in small groups, some were touring the place and experiencing demos of really neat fitness machines, and others (like myself) were nibbling on yummy cheese and brownie bites while chatting with my peers.

I’m so glad I gave Raise the Bar another go. It was not difficult to get into “relax” mode when you are in a beautiful venue with a nice glass of wine, delicious food, free chair massages, and great people. I met quite a few young professionals and am looking forward to seeing my new friends at next month’s event!

Welcome to The Art + Environment Conference at the Nevada Museum of Art. We’re launching this new initiative with a conference in October, and we hope you will join us to talk about how and why art has become just as important as science in understanding the nature of environments.

Just as scientists in the 1960s began crossing disciplines to understand how environments work, so artists started to mix genres in order to model our relationship with them. Sculptors stopped working with clay and steel in their studios and went directly to the earth. Architects became installation artists and digital cartographers. Painters and photographers became participant-observers in agriculture and industry.

We’re bringing together artists, designers, writers, and scientists from around the country to discuss how they change-and are changed by-the natural, built, and virtual environments in which they work.
